Toyota Tacoma Key Replacement in San Diego

A remote head key for a 2016 to 2023 Tacoma is $169 in your driveway, where a Toyota dealer typically charges about $320. Trucks with a start button take a $249 smart key.

Tacoma keys follow the truck's four generations: early trucks with or without a chip, second-generation chip keys, third-generation remote head keys with a smart key on upper trims, and a newer fob system from 2024.

Every Tacoma key we make matches the factory chip for that truck and goes through the same registration steps the dealer runs. One price covers blank, cut, programming and the trip out, with a year of warranty behind it. For a truck with every key gone, lost car keys walks through the job. Trucks from 1995 to 1997 need a VIN check first; text it to us and the quote follows.

Model yearsTypical dealerValue Car KeysYou keep
1998 to 2004: Transponder chip keyFirst-generation Tacoma. Whether the key carries a chip varies by year and build, so the VIN gets checked before we drive. A chip key is $129; a truck without a chip gets its own quote on that call. $250 $129 $121
2005 to 2015: Transponder chip keySecond generation. A black-head chip key, first with the dot-marked 4D chip and later with the G chip; the letter under the head tells us which. A metal-only copy will open the cab and leave the engine silent. $250 $129 $121
2016 to 2023: Remote head key (Most SR, SR5, TRD Sport and TRD Off-Road trucks on the remote head key; the Limited and some upper trims on the $249 smart key)Third generation. The H chip rides in a key whose head also holds the remote buttons, and Toyota kept it on base trucks into the 2020s, well after smart keys reached the upper trims. $320 $169 $151
2024 to 2026: Smart key for push-to-startFourth generation, built on a newer key platform. The VIN gets checked before any quote, and if the truck must go to the dealer for its key, we tell you then and there. $500 $249 $251

Lost every Tacoma key?

With every key gone, a 2016 to 2023 Tacoma is $229 for the remote head key or $309 on a smart key truck: the spare figure plus $60 for the VIN decode and immobilizer reset. A 2005 to 2015 chip key truck is $189. Bring the title or registration to the truck, and a photo ID in the owner's name.

For 2024 and newer trucks we confirm by VIN whether a lost-keys job can be done at the truck before quoting anything. If the cab is locked with no key, say so when you call and we arrive ready to open it. The reset wipes the missing keys, so one found later in a toolbox will not start the truck.

Toyota Tacoma key questions

Is a Tacoma Limited key different from an SR5 key?

From 2016 to 2023, usually yes. Most SR5 and TRD trucks start with a turned H chip remote head key, $169 at the truck, while the Limited and some upper trims use a push-button smart key at $249. Look beside the steering wheel: a start button means the smart key. Toyota dealer figures run about $320 and $500.

Will a plain hardware store copy of my 2005 to 2015 Tacoma key start the truck?

A metal-only copy will not. It will turn the door lock, yet the immobilizer only starts the engine for a chip it has been taught. We cut and program a matching dot or G chip key for $129 at the truck, against roughly $250 at a Toyota dealer, and test it in the ignition before we pack up.

Can you key a 2024 or newer Tacoma at the truck?

We check first. The fourth-generation Tacoma uses newer fob hardware, so we run your VIN before quoting. If the key or its programming is dealer-only, we say so during that call and you skip a wasted trip. Where the job can be done at the truck, the smart key price is $249 with the one-year warranty.

Why is a dealer's lost-key job on a Tacoma so much more?

Mostly the tow and the wait. With no key, the truck has to reach the service drive, a $125 to $200 tow, and if the key is ordered the truck may sit one to three days waiting on the part. The key and programming alone run about $320 for a remote head key there. We do the same job where the truck sits for $229.

Can you meet my Tacoma at a job site?

Yes, wherever the van can pull up beside the truck. The blade gets cut in our van and the key programmed in the cab, so the Tacoma stays put while you keep working. Give us the address and any gate code or lot number when you call. The drive is included anywhere in the county, seven days a week from 7 AM to 9 PM.
