Honda Car Key Replacement in San Diego

A Honda chip key costs $139 at your car and about $260 at a San Diego Honda dealer. Smart keys start at $239 against roughly $480.

Civic, Accord, CR-V and Pilot keys ride on the van, so most Honda jobs finish in one visit, usually in 20 to 40 minutes, wherever the car is parked.

You get the chip type Honda specifies and the dealer's own programming procedure, minus the tow, the appointment and the service-department markup. Every key is guaranteed for a year, and the phone quote holds; you pay after the key starts the car.

If you have no working key at all, the job still happens at the car. We get the key code from your VIN, cut the blade and program the immobilizer on the spot. See lost car keys for how that visit goes.

Known Honda key and ignition problems

Car key problems by make, and what each dash message means

Which Honda key do you have?

Teeth on the edge, no buttons: 1998 to 2013

That is a transponder key. It looks like a house key with a fat plastic head, and the head is where the chip lives. A hardware store can copy the metal, but the copy will open the door and refuse to start the engine. We cut the blade and program the chip in the same visit for $139.

Thick blade with a groove down the middle: 2003 and newer

Honda switched to a high-security laser-cut blade starting with the 2003 Accord, and the Civic, CR-V, Odyssey and Pilot followed over the next few years. The groove is milled, not stamped, which is why most key kiosks turn these away. We cut ours from the key code, right in the van, for $159.

Lock and unlock buttons on the key itself

A remote head key. The chip, the blade and the remote are one piece, so replacing it means cutting, programming the immobilizer and pairing the remote. All three are inside the $179 price. Odyssey keys with the sliding-door buttons are the same job.

No blade, a start button in the dash: 2013 and newer

A smart key, on the trims built with push-button start: Accord from 2013, Civic and Odyssey from 2014, CR-V from 2015, Pilot and HR-V from 2016. Accord and Pilot memory-seat fobs, marked Driver 1 or Driver 2, are separate parts, and we bring the one you need. There is an emergency blade tucked inside the fob, and we cut that as well.

Lost every Honda key?

Lost every key to your Honda? The VIN hands us the key code, we cut the blade inside the van, then program the immobilizer at the car with the same tool a dealer uses. Nothing gets towed and no part has to be ordered.

Honda does not lock locksmiths out of this procedure, so it works on almost every model year, and we confirm yours by phone in a minute. Add $60 for the code pull and the extra programming time. Counted against a tow and a dealer visit, a lost-keys job usually lands $200 or more under the dealership.

What the dealer charges, and why

San Diego Honda dealers price a key as a part plus programming labor, and the two lines come to roughly $260 for a chip key and $480 for a smart key before tax. If you have no key, add a tow to the dealership, typically $125 to $200, and one to three idle days if the dealer must order the fob.

Our price already folds in the key, cutting, programming and the drive, and the work happens in your driveway or in the lot where you left the car.

Two things we say on the phone first

Two things we will tell you before we drive. A Honda remote that stopped locking the doors but still starts the car usually needs a $5 battery, not a new key. And a used Honda smart key from a salvage yard usually cannot be paired to a second car once it has been married to the first, so we do not spend your money trying.

Honda key questions

How much does a Honda key cost in San Diego?

A Honda chip key is $139 at your car, a laser-cut key $159, a remote head key $179 and a smart key $239. Those prices include cutting, programming and the drive. A San Diego Honda dealer typically quotes $260 to $480 for the same key, and a tow on top if you have no working key.

Do I have to take my Honda to the dealer for a new key?

No. Honda immobilizers can be programmed at the car by a locksmith with the right tool, and we carry the common Civic, Accord, CR-V and Pilot keys on the van. The dealer's only advantage is a waiting room, and you pay for it in the price and the tow.

I lost the only key to my Civic. What happens now?

We come to the car, read the key code off the VIN, cut a new blade and program the immobilizer on the spot. It takes 30 to 45 minutes and adds $60 to the spare-key price. Bring your registration or title and a matching ID. Afterward we program your Honda to forget the lost key, free, so whoever picks it up cannot start the car.

Is an aftermarket Honda key as good as the dealer's?

Yes. Our Honda keys are OEM or OEM-grade and carry the chip type Honda specifies, so the car cannot tell the difference. The programming procedure is the same one the dealer runs. Every key carries our one-year warranty, which covers the key, its remote functions and the programming, the part that matters.

Can you replace an Accord smart key marked Driver 1?

Yes. On Accord and Pilot trims with memory seats, each memory fob is its own part, labeled Driver 1 or Driver 2, separate from the standard smart key. The seat and mirror settings follow whichever fob unlocks the car, so we bring the Driver 1 or Driver 2 fob you need, program it and test the seat before we leave.

My Honda remote stopped working but the key still starts the car. Do I need a new key?

Usually not. If the key starts the car the chip is fine, and a remote that quit is almost always a dead battery, which you can change yourself for about $5. If a fresh battery does not bring it back, we can re-pair it for $79 to $119. If the remote itself has failed, a new remote head key is $179.
