Car key replacement across San Diego's neighborhoods

We cut and program car keys at your car in every San Diego neighborhood, Rancho Bernardo to San Ysidro, for $125 to $399 on most cars. The drive and a one-year warranty are included.

The city runs from the Rancho Bernardo end of the 15 down to the San Ysidro border crossing, and a key costs the same at either end. Pacific Beach, Mira Mesa and Paradise Hills all pay one price with the drive built in.

Almost every neighborhood gets pointed to the same place for a new key: the Kearny Mesa auto row on Convoy Street, Balboa Avenue and Kearny Mesa Road. With no working key, that trip starts with a $125 to $200 tow, then a parts order that can take one to three days, then programming labor billed as its own line at $100 to $180.

We skip all three. The blade is cut by code, the chip or fob is programmed to the immobilizer in your driveway or parking space, and the key is OEM or OEM-grade with the chip your car expects. The full breakdown of where the savings come from is on why we cost less.

The job happens where the car is parked.

Car key prices in San Diego

San Diego pays the same price as every other city in the county, with the drive included. The dealer column is a typical San Diego dealership quote for the same key, before tax.

Prices as of 2026-09-30. Every price includes the drive to you anywhere in San Diego County. There is no trip fee and no after-hours rate inside our open hours. All keys lost adds $60.
Key or jobTypical dealerValue Car KeysYou keep
Basic metal key (no chip)Older cars and door-only keys. Cut by code at the car, no programming involved. $40 to $90 $49 to $89 see note
Transponder chip keyA metal key with a chip in the head that the car has to recognize before it will start. Most 1998 to 2015 cars. $230 to $380 $125 to $199 $105 to $181
Remote head keyA chip key with lock and unlock buttons built into the head, including flip keys. $300 to $450 $165 to $259 $135 to $191
High-security laser-cut keyThick blade with a groove milled down the middle instead of teeth on the edge. Needs a different cutter, which is why hardware stores send you away. $270 to $450 $145 to $249 $125 to $201
Smart key for push-to-startThe fob that stays in your pocket. Programmed to the immobilizer and the remote system in one sitting. $400 to $750 $229 to $399 $171 to $351
European smart or remote keyVolkswagen, Audi, BMW and older Mercedes keys. Older Volkswagen remote keys sit at the low end; BMW and Audi smart keys at the top. They take dealer-level tools and more programming time, which the price reflects. $380 to $900 $209 to $449 $171 to $451

The beaches and the peninsula

In Pacific Beach and Ocean Beach the usual call is a fob that went into the surf in a pocket, or a key locked inside a car parked off Mission Boulevard or Newport Avenue.

Salt water ruins a remote quickly, and a dead Toyota or Honda smart key means a new one programmed at the curb, not a flatbed up the 5. Parking near the sand is tight, so give us the cross street and we will find a spot close by.

Point Loma calls come from driveways up the hill and from the lots at Liberty Station. La Jolla calls come from the Village, the Shores and the streets near UCSD along Torrey Pines Road. The cars there skew newer and European, so plan on a longer programming session for a BMW or an Audi, with the price quoted by model year before we drive.

Kearny Mesa, where the dealer keys come from

The dealers along Convoy Street, Balboa Avenue and Kearny Mesa Road sit near the 163, the 805 and the 52, which is why the whole city gets sent there. From Hillcrest, North Park or Clairemont it is a short drive, but a car with no working key still rides there on a flatbed, and the service lane still wants an appointment.

A Toyota smart key at the dealer typically runs $500 and a Honda smart key $480, before tax and before any tow. Ours are $249 and $239, and those numbers already cover programming and the trip to you. Keep the quote you got on the auto row. Read it to us on the phone and we will price the same key against it, line by line.

From Rancho Bernardo down to the border

Mira Mesa, Rancho Penasquitos, Carmel Valley and Rancho Bernardo are commuter neighborhoods strung along the 15, the 56 and the 805. Much of our work up there happens in office and lab parking lots in Sorrento Valley and at Carmel Mountain Plaza, where a lost key would otherwise cost a day away from work.

Tierrasanta and the College Area near SDSU bring older Civic, Corolla and Subaru Outback chip keys, often a spare before the last key disappears. In the south end, Paradise Hills, Otay Mesa and San Ysidro sit closer to the Mile of Cars than to Kearny Mesa, and many of the trucks there earn their keep. Expect F-150 and Ram keys for the warehouse and trucking yards off the 905, and lockouts in the Las Americas Premium Outlets lot beside the border crossing.

San Diego questions

Does a key cost more in La Jolla than in Clairemont?

No. The price follows the car and the key type, not the neighborhood, and the drive is built into every quote. Our Honda chip key price, $139, holds whether the car sits in La Jolla, Clairemont or Otay Mesa. Distance only moves the arrival time we quote on the phone, never the number on the bill.

Why is the Kearny Mesa dealer quote so much higher for the same key?

Because the dealer bill stacks costs we leave out: a showroom parts markup, programming labor billed separately at $100 to $180, and a $125 to $200 tow when no key works. We buy keys direct and program them at the car in one visit. The chip and the programming procedure match what the dealer runs, and the key carries a one-year warranty.

My only key went into the water at Ocean Beach. Can you make one at the car?

Yes, and a beach lot is a fine place for it, since programming happens at the car. We decode the key from the VIN, cut a fresh blade and pair it to the immobilizer right there. A lost-key job is the spare price plus $60. Bring the registration or title with an ID that matches it, and if the paperwork is locked in the glove box, tell us when you call.

Can you make keys for the BMWs and Mercedes common in La Jolla?

For most model years, yes. A 2001 to 2013 BMW remote key is $349 against about $650 at the dealer, and a 2010 to 2018 BMW smart key is $399 against $750. Mercedes keys for 2013 and older are $329 against $620. A 2014 or newer Mercedes key has to come from the dealer, and we tell you that on the first call.

Can you meet me in a parking garage at work?

Usually, yes. Office garages in Sorrento Valley, Kearny Mesa and Downtown are regular stops, as long as the van can park near your car. Some older structures have low clearance, so when you call, tell us the level, the nearest entrance, any gate code and whether a tall van fits, and no time is lost finding you.

Is Rancho Bernardo or San Ysidro too far out for you?

No. Both are inside the service area at the same price as Hillcrest, with no trip fee. They sit at the far ends of the 15 and the 5, so arrival there tends to fall toward the late side of the usual 45 to 90 minute window. We give you a real time on the phone based on where the van is.
