Ford F-150 Key Replacement in San Diego

An F-150 flip key for a 2015 and later turn-key truck is $169, and the push-button fob is $239, both programmed at the truck. Ford dealers typically charge about $310 and $450.

A 2010 F-150 key and a 2016 one share almost nothing: the blade profile, the chip and the programming are all different. Your model year, and from 2015 your trim, decide which key we bring.

We come to the truck, a Santee driveway or a job site off State Route 52, so nothing gets towed. You get the chip Ford specified for that year, programmed with the same PATS procedure the dealer uses and covered for a year. Pre-2015 trucks with a plain chip key are $129, drive included.

Model yearsTypical dealerValue Car KeysYou keep
1999 to 2003: Transponder chip keyEdge-cut Ford key with a plain black head and an early PATS chip inside. Keyless entry, where fitted, was a separate remote on the key ring. $240 $129 $111
2004 to 2010: Transponder chip keySame edge-cut profile on the new truck, now with a 40-bit chip. The 2004 F-150 Heritage, the previous body sold alongside it that year, keeps the earlier key, so we go by the VIN rather than the badge. $240 $129 $111
2011 to 2014: Transponder chip keyMost trucks from these years moved to the 80-bit chip, so a 40-bit key from a 2008 truck can turn the ignition without firing the engine. A key with lock buttons molded into its head counts as the $169 remote head key. $240 $129 $111
2015 to 2020: Remote head key (XL and most XLT trucks usually turn a flip key; many Lariat and higher trucks, plus some optioned XLTs, start with a $239 button fob)The aluminum-body truck moved to Ford's milled HU101 blade, which folds into the flip key. An edge-cut key from an older F-150 does not fit this ignition. $310 $169 $141
2021 to 2026: Smart key for push-to-start (Push-button start on most trims above the XL; many XL work trucks still turn the $169 flip key)On most current trucks the fob is the everyday key. A metal blade tucked inside it unlocks the cab if the fob's cell dies. $450 $239 $211

Lost every F-150 key?

Losing every key still leaves the truck where it is parked. We decode the key from your VIN and cut a blade on the spot, then program through the OBD port.

On many 1999 to 2010 trucks the tool must sit out a security delay of about 10 minutes, and some of those trucks refuse to start until two keys are stored, so you get both keys quoted before we leave. On most 2011 and newer trucks the tool gets in through a coded exchange with the truck instead.

The all-keys-lost job is the key price for your year plus $60. To prove ownership, show the title or the registration with your photo ID; the names have to agree. The missing keys get erased from the immobilizer for free. If your F-150 has the SecuriCode keypad beside the driver's door, the factory code on the owner's card gets you into the cab while you wait.

Ford F-150 key questions

Is my 2017 F-150 XLT key a flip key or a push-button fob?

Check the steering column. A key slot there means the flip key with the milled HU101 blade, $169 at the truck. A button marked Start means an Intelligent Access fob, $239, usually standard from the Lariat up and an option on some XLTs. Text us the VIN if you want the part confirmed before we come out.

Why won't the spare from my 2012 F-150 fit my 2016 truck?

Ford changed the blade for 2015. The 2012 key has teeth cut along its edges, while the 2016 truck takes the milled HU101 profile, so the older key will not enter the ignition. The flip key is a different part with its own remote as well. A new one for your 2016, made at the truck, is $169.

I have two working F-150 keys. Can I program a third one myself?

On a truck with a key ignition, usually yes. Switch the first key to On and back off, repeat within a few seconds with the second, then turn the freshly cut key to On; the owner's manual gives the exact timing. The new key needs the right chip, which is 80-bit on most 2011 to 2014 trucks. With a single key, the process needs a programming tool.

Why might my 2006 F-150 need two new keys when every key is lost?

Many 1999 to 2010 trucks will not start after a full key erase until two keys are stored in the immobilizer. That is how that generation of PATS was built, not an upsell, so if your truck is one of them we quote both keys before driving out. The second key becomes your spare and makes the two-key routine possible next time.

How does a dealer's F-150 fob bill compare with yours?

A Ford dealer typically quotes about $450 for an Intelligent Access fob, $100 to $180 of it programming labor. Ours is $239 at the truck, covering the fob, its hidden blade, programming and the drive. With no key left, the dealer also needs the truck towed in, usually $125 to $200, and the part may take one to three days. Send us that quote to compare.
