Ford Escape Key Replacement in San Diego

A push-button Escape fob is $239 programmed in your driveway, and the 2013 to 2019 flip key is $169. Ford dealers typically charge about $450 and $310 for those two keys.

Four generations of Escape have been sold here since the 2001 model year. The early cars use a plain chip key, the 2013 redesign brought a milled blade in a flip key, and most 2020 and later cars use a push-button start.

Read us the year off the registration and say whether the dash has a slot or a Start button; that sets the price before the van rolls. You get the chip Ford fitted to your car, programmed by the factory procedure, with key, remote and programming under warranty for 12 months. For a spare that only needs to start the engine, a plain milled chip key without buttons is $149 on 2013 and newer cars with a key slot.

Model yearsTypical dealerValue Car KeysYou keep
2001 to 2007: Transponder chip keyEdge-cut Ford key with a black plastic head and a PATS chip. The chip type changed during this run, so we match it to your VIN. Any keyless remote from these years is its own fob, apart from the key. $240 $129 $111
2008 to 2012: Transponder chip keyStill an edge-cut blade, with a 40-bit chip on most cars; some late builds may carry the 80-bit chip, and the VIN settles it. If lock and unlock buttons sit in the key's head, you have the $169 remote head key. $240 $129 $111
2013 to 2019: Remote head key (Flip key on most S and SE cars; the $239 push-button fob on most Titanium cars and on some SEs that were optioned up)The redesign brought Ford's HU101 blade, milled down both faces and folded into a flip key. It will not fit the ignition of an older Escape, and an older key will not fit this one. $310 $169 $141
2020 to 2026: Smart key for push-to-start (Push-button start on most cars; if yours has a keyed ignition instead, it takes the $169 flip key)The fourth-generation Escape moved most buyers to a button start. The fob hides a slim blade for the door lock, and we cut that blade from the VIN as part of the job. $450 $239 $211

Lost every Escape key?

When the last Escape key is gone, the VIN gives us the cut code for either blade, edge-cut or HU101, and the van's machine cuts it. The car is programmed at the diagnostic port below the dash. On 2001 to 2012 cars the tool may have to wait out a timed security step before it can add keys; most 2013 and newer cars use coded access instead.

Push-button cars get a new fob with its hidden blade on the same visit. Expect the regular key price for that year with $60 added. For ownership, we check the Escape's title or registration against your ID. The lost keys come off the car's approved list at no extra cost.

Ford Escape key questions

What key does a 2013 to 2019 Escape SE use?

Most SE models turn a flip key cut on the HU101 milled blade, which is $169 at your car. If your SE starts with a button instead, it was ordered with the Intelligent Access option and takes the $239 fob, standard on most Titanium models. A plain HU101 key with no remote buttons is $149 when all you want is a spare for the ignition.

Will a key kiosk copy of my 2016 Escape key start the car?

Not by itself. A kiosk may not handle the HU101 blade, which is milled on both faces with no notches along its edges, and a copied blade carries no chip paired to your Escape. The engine stays off until a chip is programmed to the car. We cut and pair the key at the car: $149 plain, $169 with the flip remote.

My 2010 Escape has two keys. How do I add a third without a tool?

Follow the two-key method printed in the owner's manual. Get a new key cut with the chip that matches your year, cycle each working key to On and off in turn, then switch the new key to On within the few seconds allowed. The method adds a key but cannot erase a lost one. Down to a single key, a spare programmed by us starts at $129.

The remote on my Escape key works but the engine stays dead. Why?

The chip is the usual suspect. The lock buttons and the immobilizer chip are separate parts sharing one head, so a cracked chip can still work the doors. A theft light on the dash that stays lit or flashes when you turn the key points the same way. We test it at the car and replace the key if needed, $129 to $169 depending on year.

How far apart are the dealer and your prices on an Escape key?

About $141 on a flip key and $211 on a fob. A Ford dealer typically bills $310 and $450; we charge $169 and $239. The difference is the $100 to $180 the dealer charges separately to program, the service-department markup, and a showroom we do not run. Lose every key and the dealer adds a tow, commonly $125 to $200.
