Jeep Grand Cherokee Key Replacement in San Diego

A 2014 or newer Grand Cherokee fob is $249 made at your curb, while a Jeep store quotes near $460. The 2008 to 2013 dash-slot fobik is $189.

From 1999 on, the Grand Cherokee has used five kinds of key, and the model year usually names yours. Two spots need a second look: 2011 to 2013 Jeeps with Keyless Enter 'n Go, and 2021, when the old body and the three-row L overlapped.

Each key comes matched to your VIN, OEM or OEM-grade, and programmed at the Jeep in the order a Jeep service bay follows. One quote covers key, programming and travel, and the reasons our number runs lower sit in overhead, not in the key.

Model yearsTypical dealerValue Car KeysYou keep
1999 to 2004: Transponder chip keyThe WJ body. Its key is plain metal with a transponder molded into the head and no buttons; the lock remote dangles from the ring on its own. If only that remote went missing, pairing a new one fixes it. $260 $145 $115
2005 to 2007: Remote head keyThe first WK. The blade, the transponder and three remote buttons share one head, so it prices as a remote head key. If a no-frills spare is enough, a buttonless chip key runs $145. $350 $189 $161
2008 to 2013: Remote head key (Keyless Enter 'n Go Jeeps from 2011 take the proximity version, which we charge at the smart key price, $249)The fobik years. This blade-less fob pushes into the dash and twists there, and it is billed at our remote head key price, $189. Fobiks for 2008 to 2010 and for 2011 to 2013 are different parts, so the VIN picks ours. $350 $189 $161
2014 to 2021: Smart key for push-to-start (Every trim; the 2021 two-row kept this fob, the 2021 Grand Cherokee L did not)The 2014 refresh moved every trim to a start button, so the fob never has to leave your jacket. On most 2018 and newer Grand Cherokees a gateway module walls off the diagnostic port, and we connect through it at the car. $460 $249 $211
2022 to 2026: Smart key for push-to-start (Also the three-row Grand Cherokee L, which arrived a year early as a 2021 model)The redesign brought a newer fob, a different part from the 2014 to 2021 key, so an older fob will not stand in for it. Programming usually passes the gateway here as well. $460 $249 $211

Lost every Grand Cherokee key?

Having no Grand Cherokee key left is still a house call. Once your title or registration agrees with your driver's license, the VIN's key code goes to our cutter, we read the security PIN (on most Grand Cherokees it comes from the vehicle), and new keys are programmed at the port. On a fobik Jeep, the dash node that reads the fob has to accept the new one too.

With nothing left to copy, the key's price goes up by $60. On most 2018 and newer Grand Cherokees, expect one more step through the security gateway; it sits inside the quote, not on top of it. We wipe the key you lost from the Jeep before leaving, so a stranger who picks it up in a lot at Fashion Valley holds a dead piece of plastic.

Jeep Grand Cherokee key questions

My 2012 Grand Cherokee has a start button where the key slot should be. Which fob do I need?

The proximity fob, which we price as a smart key, $249. On most 2011 to 2013 Keyless Enter 'n Go models the button fits over the slot a fobik would plug into, and it lifts off. Without that button, your Jeep takes the standard fobik at $189. Either fob hides an emergency blade, which gets cut to match your driver's door lock.

Why do you ask which body my 2021 Grand Cherokee has?

Because 2021 was a crossover year. The two-row Grand Cherokee kept the older body and fob, while the new three-row Grand Cherokee L brought a newer fob that is a different part. Either one costs $249, programmed at the Jeep. Count the seat rows or text us the VIN, and the right fob comes with us.

The fobik stopped turning in the dash. Is the fob to blame?

Sometimes, not always. On 2008 to 2013 Grand Cherokees the fobik plugs into an electronic ignition node, and that node can fail by itself, which a new fob will not fix. We test the slot and the fob before quoting anything. If the node is at fault, the repair runs $279 to $695 depending on whether it can be repaired or must be replaced, and the page for that fault explains the difference.

Can I replace just the separate remote on a 1999 to 2004 Grand Cherokee?

Yes. On the WJ the remote is its own fob, so losing it does not call for a new key. If you already have a new remote in hand, pairing it at the Jeep runs $79 to $119. If the chip key is gone as well, that key is $145, and we pair your remote on the same trip.
