Toyota Highlander Key Replacement in San Diego

Nearly every 2020 or newer Highlander takes a $249 smart key, programmed in your driveway, while Toyota service desks tend to charge about $500. Older Highlander chip keys start at $129.

The Highlander started with a chip key in 2001, added a smart key on its top trims in 2008, and moved to push-button start on nearly every trim with the 2020 redesign. In between, many midrange trims use a remote head key.

A three-row SUV without a working key never needs a flatbed from us: we decode, cut and register the key where the Highlander is parked. Each key is the chip or fob Toyota specifies, programmed with the dealer's steps and backed for twelve months. Anyone with a dealer figure in hand can send us the quote.

Model yearsTypical dealerValue Car KeysYou keep
2001 to 2007: Transponder chip keyFirst generation, on a black-head chip key: typically the 4C chip at first and the 4D chip, stamped with a dot, later on. Some early ones keep immobilizer data in the engine computer, which changes a lost-keys job; we flag it on the call. $250 $129 $121
2008 to 2013: Transponder chip key (Most base and SE cars on a chip key; many Limited cars have the $249 smart key)Second generation. Early cars kept the dot key and the G chip arrived toward the end of the run, so we match the letter under the head. Many have the remote buttons built into the key, priced as a $169 remote head key. $250 $129 $121
2014 to 2019: Remote head key (Most LE and LE Plus cars on the remote head key; cars with a start button, usually XLE, Limited and some later trims, take the $249 smart key)Third generation. The remote buttons live in the head of an H chip key cut on a standard edge blade. Check for a start button before you call, because it changes the key and the price. $320 $169 $151
2020 to 2025: Smart key for push-to-start (Push-button start on nearly every trim)Fourth generation, hybrid included. The fob carries a backup metal key that opens the driver's side. $500 $249 $251

Lost every Highlander key?

Every key gone on a 2020 or newer Highlander means $309 for the smart key; on a third-generation car the remote head key totals $229. Both figures are the spare price with $60 added for reading the cut off the VIN and wiping and relearning the immobilizer. First- and second-generation chip key cars total $189. We need to see the title or registration, along with the owner's photo ID.

The first-generation cars are the ones to ask about first. On some of them the key data lives in the engine computer, so the job means working on that module rather than only plugging in, and we say so before we drive. Many newer smart key Highlanders make the reset pause about 16 minutes for security, which costs time, not extra money.

Toyota Highlander key questions

My 2016 Highlander XLE starts with a button. What key does it use?

A smart key, which we program for $249 on the spot; a Toyota dealer would ask close to $500. On the 2014 to 2019 Highlander the start button usually came on the XLE, Limited and some later trims, and those cars use a fob that never leaves your pocket. The LE and LE Plus usually use a key you turn, the $169 H chip remote head key.

Is a Grand Highlander key the same as a Highlander key?

Treat it as its own car. The Grand Highlander arrived for the 2024 model year as a separate, larger model, and this page covers the regular Highlander. Text us the VIN; we check the fob, the price and whether the work happens at the car before anyone drives anywhere.

My older Highlander key sticks and will not turn. Is it worn out?

Possibly. Ease the steering wheel side to side as you turn the key, since a locked steering column can hold the cylinder. If that does not free it, a worn blade is a common cause on high-mileage chip key cars, and a new key cut to the factory code often turns smoothly again. If the tumblers inside the cylinder are worn instead, ignition repair runs $179 to $349 on site.

Why would a dealer tow my Highlander for a lost key?

The service department registers keys in its bay, so an SUV with no working key arrives on a truck: $125 to $200 before any key work, plus a day or three if the key has to be ordered. We work out the blade code from the VIN, then register the new key where the Highlander is parked, from $189 for a chip key with none left.

Can you program a Highlander fob I bought online?

If it is new, never registered anywhere and matches your Highlander's part number, usually yes, for $79 to $119. Most used fobs refuse to register to a new car, so a secondhand one is often money spent on a part that will not pair. Text us the listing's part number first, and we check it against your car before you spend anything.
