Toyota Prius Key Replacement in San Diego

A new Prius smart key costs $249, registered where the car is parked to both its immobilizer and its keyless entry. A Toyota dealer typically asks about $500.

Every US Prius liftback from 2004 on starts with a fob and a power button instead of an ignition key, so nearly every Prius job is a smart key job. The 2001 to 2003 first-generation sedan, with its chip key, is the exception.

The 2004 to 2009 car uses a fob you push into a dash slot; later cars leave the fob in your pocket. Either way the fob is programmed to the car on site, its emergency blade is cut where it has one, and a one-year warranty comes with it. Smart key replacement covers the job in more detail.

Model yearsTypical dealerValue Car KeysYou keep
2001 to 2003: Transponder chip keyFirst-generation Prius sedan, the only US Prius with a turning ignition key. Its head hides a transponder chip for the immobilizer, and we confirm which chip by VIN before quoting. $250 $129 $121
2004 to 2009: Smart key for push-to-start (Every car uses the slot fob; cars with the Smart Entry package also work from a pocket)Second generation. The fob seats in a slot in the dash and you press the power button. With Smart Entry, the doors unlock and the car starts with the fob still in a pocket or bag. $500 $249 $251
2010 to 2015: Smart key for push-to-startThird generation, and no slot: the car looks for the fob when you press the power button. If the fob battery is flat, holding the fob against the power button still starts most of these cars. $500 $249 $251
2016 to 2022: Smart key for push-to-startFourth generation. The fob holds a slim mechanical key for the door lock, cut along with the fob. $500 $249 $251
2023 to 2026: Smart key for push-to-startFifth generation, redesigned for 2023. Recently redesigned Toyotas can use a newer key system, so the VIN check comes before the quote, and if it is a dealer job you hear it right then. $500 $249 $251

Lost every Prius key?

With no Prius fob left, the price is $309: the $249 smart key plus $60 to clear the car's stored keys and register new fobs from scratch. A 2001 to 2003 chip key car comes to $189. The paperwork is the car's title or registration, with photo ID naming the same owner.

The missing fobs are erased in the same visit, so one that surfaces later is useless to whoever holds it.

The 2004 to 2009 car is the one to flag up front. On some of these a lost-keys job means working on the smart key computer behind the dash instead of only plugging into the diagnostic port, which takes longer, and you hear about it before we drive. Many newer Prius models instead hold us behind a security countdown of roughly 16 minutes before accepting a fob.

Toyota Prius key questions

My Prius fob battery died. Can I still get the car started?

Usually yes. On 2010 and newer cars, press the brake and touch the Toyota emblem side of the fob to the power button; the car can read the chip without a battery, and the owner's manual marks the exact spot. On the 2004 to 2009 car, seat the fob in its dash slot the normal way. Then swap in a fresh cell, which any parts store stocks.

Does it matter whether my 2004 to 2009 Prius has Smart Entry?

Yes, for the fob we bring. A car with the Smart Entry package needs a fob that also unlocks and starts from your pocket, and one without it does not. We read the VIN, bring the matching fob and program whichever features your car has. The price is $249 either way, against about $500 at a Toyota dealer.

My Prius will not go to READY. Is it the key?

Sometimes. If the dash warns that no key is found, try the other fob, or touch this one to the power button. If a second fob works, the first one is the problem, and a replacement is $249. If no fob gets the car to READY, the cause may be the 12-volt battery or something else, and we tell you so rather than sell a key.

What about the first Prius, the 2001 to 2003 sedan?

Usually a chip key job. The first-generation sedan uses an ignition key you turn, with a transponder chip under the plastic, cut and registered on site for $129, or $189 with no key left. A Toyota dealer figure for a chip key runs about $250. Give us the VIN so we bring the right blank and chip.

Why does programming a Prius need a healthy 12-volt battery?

Because the car has to stay awake through the whole registration, and a weak 12-volt battery can cut the session short. If your Prius has been slow to reach READY or needed a jump lately, flag it on the phone and we plan around it. The hybrid battery is a separate system and plays no part in the key job.
