Toyota Corolla Key Replacement in San Diego

A laser-cut key for a turn-key 2020 or newer Corolla is $149 at your car, and a push-button smart key is $249. Toyota dealers typically quote about $290 and $500.

From 1998 on, the Corolla has gone through four kinds of key: a plain chip key, a buttoned remote head key, a milled-blade key and a push-button smart key. Your year, trim and the letter on the blade tell us which.

If your Corolla came to you with a single key, a second one costs less now, while that key still works, than after it is gone. Name the model year and trim on the call and you get the price before we drive; then we cut the blade on our machine, register the key with the Toyota procedure and warranty it for a year. The spare car key page lays out that math.

Model yearsTypical dealerValue Car KeysYou keep
1998 to 2002: Transponder chip keyEighth-generation Corolla. Cars with the factory immobilizer take a black-head chip key, usually the 4C chip, and the blade typically carries no letter. The VIN tells us whether yours has one. $250 $129 $121
2003 to 2008: Transponder chip keyNinth generation. Early cars carry the 4C chip and later ones the 4D chip, which Toyota marked with a small dot on the blade. The switch came partway through this run, so read us the stamp or the VIN. $250 $129 $121
2009 to 2013: Transponder chip keyTenth generation. The dot key carried over at first and the G chip replaced it in the later cars. A metal-only copy of either turns the door lock and leaves the engine dead. $250 $129 $121
2014 to 2019: Remote head key (Remote head key on most L, LE and S cars; a $249 push-button smart key on some upper trims and packages)Eleventh generation: an H chip key with three buttons molded into the head. The 2019 Corolla Hatchback is already the newer design, so tell us the body style. $320 $169 $151
2020 to 2026: High-security laser-cut key (Turn-key cars get the milled blade; cars with a start button use a $249 smart key)Twelfth generation. Cars without push-button start use a flip key with a side-milled blade and an H chip. A start button beside the wheel moves you to the smart key price. $290 $149 $141

Lost every Corolla key?

With no Corolla key left, the bill is the spare figure plus $60: $189 for a chip key, $209 for the 2020 and newer milled key, $229 for the 2014 to 2019 remote head key and $309 for a smart key. We decode the cut from the VIN, clear the immobilizer at the car and register the new keys.

Before we drive we ask the year, the trim and if there is a start button, because those decide which of four blanks comes out of the van. Missing keys are wiped from the car during the reset, so one found later will not start it. Many newer smart key Corollas also run a countdown of about 16 minutes before the reset finishes, adding time, not cost.

Toyota Corolla key questions

Which key does a 2014 to 2019 Corolla take?

Most of these cars take a remote head key: an H chip key with its lock, unlock and panic buttons set into the plastic head. It is $169, cut and registered where the car sits, against about $320 at a Toyota dealer. If your Corolla starts with a button rather than a turned key, yours is the smart key version, which is $249.

Can a hardware store copy the flip key from my 2021 Corolla?

Not a copy that starts the car. The blade is side-milled, which a standard key kiosk is not set up to cut, and the H chip in the head has to be registered to the car's immobilizer. A blade-only copy may unlock the door and do nothing more. We cut and program the full key for $149, where the dealer charges about $290.

My Corolla key has no dot, G or H on the blade. Which chip is it?

On a 1998 to about 2004 Corolla, an unmarked black key usually carries the 4C chip. An unmarked key can also be a chipless aftermarket copy, the usual reason a key turns the door lock yet leaves the engine dead. Give us the VIN and we check the chip during the call; a chip key is $129 programmed. A pre-1998 Corolla gets priced from its VIN, so text that number over first.

The buttons on my Corolla key still lock the doors, but the car will not start. Is the key to blame?

Try the spare first. If the spare starts the car, the fault is in the first key, and a replacement H chip remote key runs $169 programmed at the car. If neither key starts it, the problem is somewhere other than the key, and you hear that from us on the phone rather than paying for a key that would not fix it.

Why do 2020 and newer Corollas come at two prices?

Because the 2020 redesign uses two systems. Cars that start with a turned key use a milled-blade key with an H chip at $149, and cars with a start button use a smart key at $249. A Toyota dealer charges roughly $290 and $500 for the same pair. A photo of your dash, texted to us, settles it before we drive.
