Parkway Plaza, Gillespie Field and the college lots
Plenty of key jobs here start in a parking lot, not a driveway. Parkway Plaza off Fletcher Parkway is a regular meeting point, and so are the student lots at Grossmont College next to Fletcher Hills and at Cuyamaca College on Rancho San Diego Parkway. A student who calls has often lost the only key already, so bring a registration and a photo ID that match.
Gillespie Field is the weekday stop. The business parks around the airport hold aerospace suppliers, manufacturers and the Taylor Guitars factory on Gillespie Way, and a key can be made in the employee lot while you stay on the clock. Send the building number and the row, and we text when the van pulls in.
Before you tow it to Main Street
The franchise stores on Main Street and North Johnson Avenue, most of them a minute off the 8, are where East County drivers get sent for keys. Ford and Nissan are on Main, Kia and Mazda on Johnson. Being close does not help when nothing will start, though. The service department needs the vehicle on its lot, so a truck with no key rides in on a flatbed.
If the parts counter does not stock the key, it gets ordered and the vehicle waits. We cut by code and program on site instead. An F-150 remote head key is $169 with us against about $310 at a dealer, a Silverado or Sierra chip key $125 against $230, and a Nissan Intelligent Key $249 against $520.
Work trucks, older sedans and worn ignitions
Most of what we make in 92019, 92020 and 92021 falls into three groups. Work trucks come first: F-150, Silverado, Sierra, Ram 1500 and Tacoma, where a lost key costs a day on the job as well as the key. Then the 2000s sedans still running here, Camry, Corolla, Civic and Accord, where a spare chip key at $125 to $199 heads off an all-keys-lost bill later.
The third group is worn hardware. On a high-mileage truck the ignition cylinder can wear until the key has to be jiggled, and sooner or later a key snaps. Extraction is $89 to $149 with no drilling. A new ignition keyed to your existing key is $179 to $349, where a dealer usually wants $350 to $700 for the same repair, and the ignition repair page lists the warning signs.
