Lost every Lexus key?
With no Lexus key left, every key the car knows gets wiped before a new one is accepted. The key code comes off the VIN, the blade is milled in the van, and the immobilizer is reset and the new key registered at the car. Add $60: an RX smart key with nothing to copy is $349, an early chip key $209.
One Lexus detail matters here. For the 2019 to 2021 ES and UX, a Lexus service bulletin says keys erased by a reset cannot be registered to any vehicle again, and some other recent models may work the same way. If the lost key might be in a gym bag, search first, because after the reset finding it will not help.
What the dealer charges, and why
A Lexus service department prices a smart key at roughly $580 with programming, and an older chip key at $290 to $330, tax extra. If no key works, the car rides in on a flatbed, typically $125 to $200, and an out-of-stock fob can mean one to three days without the car.
The gap is overhead, not parts. We buy keys direct and bring the tools to the car, so our price carries no showroom, no service-lane markup and no separate labor line.
Two things we say on the phone first
Two points before any Lexus visit. A fob for a Lexus has to be new or never paired to another car, and on the 2019 to 2021 ES and UX, Lexus service information says an erased key cannot be registered again at all. And the 2022 and newer NX and the LX 600 get a VIN check before we quote, so you hear about a dealer-only job before we drive.
