Lost every Kia key?
When every Kia key is gone, we cut a new one from the VIN code, then program it on the spot if the car has an immobilizer or a smart key. Expect $60 more than the spare-key price. Before we cut, we check that the name on your registration or title matches your photo ID.
On an immobilizer car, the missing key is struck off the approved list before we leave, free. On a turn-key Kia built without one, the old blade will still turn the ignition, and the honest fix is a new ignition cylinder keyed to the new key.
What the dealer charges, and why
At a Kia dealer the fob is one line and programming labor is another, $100 to $180 by itself, which is how a smart key reaches about $470. A key on back order adds one to three days, and a car with every key lost rides in on a $125 to $200 tow.
The anti-theft software update comes from a Kia dealer, not from us. As Kia describes it, once the update is installed the car refuses to start on the blade until the remote has unlocked it. The key itself can be made at your curb.
Two things we say on the phone first
Before we drive to a 2011 to 2021 turn-key Kia, we ask whether the steering column or ignition has been damaged. A cracked column cover or a broken cylinder turns a key job into an ignition job, and we would rather price both on the call than surprise you on arrival.
Kia and Hyundai were also reported to have agreed, in a settlement with state attorneys general, to offer owners of eligible cars a free zinc-reinforced ignition cylinder protector. A Kia dealer can tell you whether your VIN qualifies.
