Kia and Hyundai Ignition Repair in San Diego After a Theft Attempt

A theft attempt on a turn-key Kia or Hyundai breaks the lock cylinder and its housing. We replace both at the car for $289 to $549; owners report $1,500 to $3,500 at dealers and shops.

If someone tried to steal your Kia or Hyundai and your key no longer turns, or has nothing left to turn, the fix is a new lock cylinder and switch housing, fitted at the car and matched to your existing key.

The free zinc-reinforced protector Hyundai and Kia dealers now fit is made for an ignition that is still whole; it does not rebuild a broken one. Owners report quotes and bills of $1,500 to $3,500 from dealers and repair shops, several with broken windows or airbag work included and some with long waits for the part, against $289 to $549 here for the cylinder and housing, priced on the phone first.

Thefts are falling locally: the CHP counted 8,023 vehicle thefts in San Diego County in 2025, down from 10,791 in 2024. Still, California's three most stolen cars that year were the 2013 Hyundai Elantra, the 2015 Kia Optima and the 2013 Hyundai Sonata.

Is this what your car is doing?

  • The plastic cover under the steering column is cracked, hanging loose or gone.
  • Your key goes in and stops dead, or the Kia ignition is broken with no slot left to take it.
  • The lock cylinder is gone and the housing around it is cracked: a punched ignition.
  • The remote and the key still work the door locks, yet the engine stays silent.
  • The car was recovered after a theft, or the attempt failed, and the steering column needs repair.

Complaint counts are owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2011 and later model years whose text mentions a theft or break-in, counted by keyword on September 30, 2026, and they are a floor, not a total, because most owners never file.

What fails, and why

These cars share one build choice: their turn-key trims left the factory without an engine immobilizer, which reads a chip in the key before letting the engine run. Push-button trims have one. In a theft attempt, the column cover is pulled off and the lock cylinder and the housing it sits in are broken.

Whether or not the car moved, a missing cylinder leaves your key nothing to turn, and a new cylinder will not seat in a cracked housing, so the two are replaced together. A damaged column cover and any body damage are priced separately.

That is a larger job than a worn cylinder, where the housing survives. Ordinary wear is covered on our ignition repair page.

How we fix it at your car

  1. Send the VIN and a photo of the column

The VIN picks the right cylinder and housing. A photo shows how much of the housing is left and whether the cover can go back on, so you know the price before anyone drives out.

  2. Broken parts come out

What remains of the cylinder and the damaged housing comes out of the column. If your key snapped inside when you tried to start the car, those pieces come out first.

  3. New housing and cylinder, set to your key

A new housing goes in, then a cylinder with its wafers set to the cuts on your key. The key you carry today keeps opening the doors and turning the ignition, with nothing new to learn.

  4. Your remote gets checked

The anti-theft software arms only on a remote lock, so lock and unlock get tested. A lost or dead remote means a flip key with a paired remote, priced on the same visit.

  5. You start it before you pay

You start the car, shut it off and start it again, and try the key in the doors. Payment, by card or cash, waits until then.

Quotes owners have reported

These are quotes and bills owners posted on Reddit after a theft attempt, from dealers, repair shops and one mobile locksmith; none says it was a San Diego job. The $1,500 to $3,500 in the price table's dealer column is the spread owners reported from dealers and repair shops, some including broken windows or airbag work; it is not a dealer price for the cylinder and housing alone.

Recalls, and when the dealer is the right call

Under a December 2025 multistate settlement announced by the California Attorney General, Hyundai and Kia install a zinc-reinforced ignition cylinder protector free at their dealers on eligible 2011 to 2022 models without immobilizers, and owners get a limited window, counted from their notice, to book it. The protector guards an ignition that is still whole. It does not repair one that is already broken.

The anti-theft software upgrade is separate. It arms only when the doors are locked with the key fob, so it does nothing for an owner without a working remote. A flip key whose remote is paired to the car, $169 at the car against $310 at a dealer, puts the software back to work.

The settlement also offers restitution for some thefts and attempts on cars that already had the software; read the Attorney General's terms before counting on a payment. An earlier class settlement's claim window closed in early 2025. Whatever the damage, enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls: an open recall is repaired free at a franchised dealer. If your ignition is undamaged, the free protector is worth booking; after a repair, ask the dealer whether it will fit one to the new parts.

Kia and Hyundai ignition repair cost: why dealer and shop bills run high

The dealer and repair shop figures on this page come from owners who posted their quotes and bills, and they spread wide: dealer quotes of $1,500 to $2,000 for a 2020 Elantra and $2,800 before tax for a 2016 Optima, and shop figures that include broken windows or airbag work. Waiting costs too. One commenter, model not given, reported $3,500 with the ignition part back-ordered until June.

Ours is lower for plain reasons. The repair happens at your curb or in your lot, so the $125 to $200 tow never happens, and none of the price goes to showroom upkeep or a service-department markup. No new key lands on the bill either, because the new cylinder takes the key you own. If a dealer put an estimate in writing, send it over and we price the same repair.

Papers and details for the call

If you also want a new key, keep your registration or title within reach, plus ID showing the same name. California law requires a locksmith who makes a key other than by copying one to record both on the work order. Travel anywhere in San Diego County is part of every price, and calls are taken daily, 7 AM to 9 PM.

Questions people ask

Did Kia ever fix the theft problem?

Partly, and only for cars that are still undamaged. Kia and Hyundai released anti-theft software that arms when you lock with the key fob, and under a December 2025 settlement their dealers fit a zinc-reinforced ignition cylinder protector free on eligible 2011 to 2022 models. Neither one repairs an ignition already broken in an attempt. A VIN entered at nhtsa.gov/recalls shows anything still open.

How much does it cost to fix an ignition damaged in a theft attempt?

$289 to $549 at your car, for a new lock cylinder and switch housing set to your key. Owners report quotes and bills of $1,500 to $3,500 from dealers and repair shops, some of them including broken windows or airbag work. A cracked column cover or body damage is priced separately, also on the phone, so you hear the whole figure before we drive.

Does a Hyundai cost the same to repair as a Kia?

Yes, one range covers both: $289 to $549 for the cylinder and housing, fitted where the car is and matched to your key. A turn-key Elantra or Sonata takes the same repair as a Forte or Optima, since each was built without an immobilizer. Where a car lands inside the range depends on the model and how much of the housing survived.

Can a Kia with a push button start be stolen?

Push-button Kias sit outside this problem. Push-button trims have an engine immobilizer, and the cars on Hyundai's and Kia's lists are turn-key trims built without one. On a car started by a button, the repair on this page does not apply. A lost or failed smart key is a separate job, quoted before we drive.

How much does Kia charge for a replacement key?

A Kia dealer typically charges $310 for a flip key, remote included; ours is $169 at the car. Many turn-key trims from these years have no chip, so a plain cut key runs $49 to $89, close to the dealer's $40 to $90. After a theft attempt your current key usually keeps working, because the replacement cylinder takes that same key.

Does insurance cover a Kia ignition damaged in a theft attempt?

Usually, under comprehensive coverage, less your deductible, but ask your insurer before booking the repair. With the repair at $289 to $549, a high deductible can swallow most of it, so compare the two before you file. Hyundai owners should ask the same question, since the answer follows your policy rather than the make of the car.
