Dodge Key and Fobik Replacement in San Diego

A Dodge fobik or remote head key is $189 at your car against about $350 at a dealer. A push-start fob for a Charger, Challenger or Durango is $249 against roughly $460.

Dodge keys split three ways. Older compacts and SUVs like the Avenger and Nitro use a bladed key with buttons, many 2008 to 2014 models use the fobik, and push-start Chargers, Challengers and Durangos use a smart key.

A Grand Caravan in a school parking lot and a Charger outside a Chula Vista apartment get the same visit: the emergency blade cut by code, the vehicle's PIN read at the car, and the key tested before you pay. Parts come from the OEM or an OEM-grade supplier, with the chip type Dodge lists for your car.

Every key is covered for a year, including the remote and the programming. The gap against the dealer comes from overhead, not from the part, and here is where it goes.

Known Dodge key and ignition problems

Faults that come up on Dodge models often enough to have their own page, with the years, the fix and the dealer figure next to ours.

Car key problems by make, and what each dash message means

Which Dodge key do you have?

Blade and buttons in one piece: Avenger, Nitro, Caliber, early Charger

The 2008 to 2014 Avenger, 2007 to 2011 Nitro, 2007 to 2012 Caliber and 2006 to 2007 Charger turn a normal ignition cylinder with a remote head key, and the chip generation varies by year, so we match it by VIN. A chip key without buttons is $145, and the full remote head key is $189.

No blade, and the fob itself turns in the dash

That is the fobik: a plastic fob with the chip inside and no fixed blade that seats in the ignition opening on the dash and twists like a key. Dodge used it on the Grand Caravan from 2008 until the van ended in 2020, and on turn-key Journeys, the 2008 to 2010 Charger, 2008 to 2014 Challenger, 2011 to 2013 Durango and the Dart.

Push-start fob with the blade hidden inside

Durango has used a smart key on most 2014 and newer models, Challenger on 2015 and newer models, and Charger on its keyless trims from 2011. Push-start Journeys and Darts use the same fob family. We cut the tucked-away blade to your door lock and pair the fob to both the immobilizer and the door locks, for $249.

Red fob or black fob: SRT and Hellcat

Hellcat Chargers and Challengers leave the factory with two kinds of fob. The red one unlocks full engine output and the black one limits it. They are separate part numbers, so tell us which one you lost, and we quote the replacement for your exact car before we drive.

Lost every Dodge key?

When every Dodge key is gone, the car's PIN does the work. Once the title or registration matches your photo ID, we pull the PIN out of the car's modules, cut an emergency blade by code, and program a new fobik or smart key over the diagnostic port. The all-keys-lost visit is the spare price plus $60.

On most 2018 and newer Dodges, the Charger, Challenger and Durango among them, a security gateway blocks key programming from the port, and we connect around it with a gateway cable or an approved online login. That step is part of the price, and the lost key is deleted from the car before we leave.

What the dealer charges, and why

At a Dodge dealer the part and the programming together run about $350 for a fobik and about $460 for a push-start fob, with programming often listed as its own $100 to $180 line. If the car will not start, a tow adds $125 to $200.

Several of these cars are out of production now: the Grand Caravan, Journey, Dart, Avenger and Nitro. Their keys are still available and we buy them direct, so owning an older Dodge is no reason to pay dealer money for a key.

Two things we say on the phone first

A fobik that will not turn, or that the dash will not accept, is not always the fob. The socket it plugs into, the wireless ignition node, can wear out, and a new key will not cure that. We test the node first, and if it has failed we quote the node repair on the page for that fault, $279 to $695, instead of selling you a key.

The 2024 and newer electric Charger uses a new fob family and is quoted case by case. If the dealer can do it for less or sooner, we say so on the phone.

Dodge key questions

What is a fobik, and does my Dodge have one?

A fobik is a fob that doubles as the key: the chip is inside, there is no fixed blade, and it twists in a socket on the dash. Your Dodge has one if it is a 2008 to 2020 Grand Caravan, a 2008 to 2014 Challenger, a 2008 to 2010 Charger or a 2011 to 2013 Durango. Replacement is $189 at your car.

Why does a Challenger key cost more than a Grand Caravan key?

Because a 2015 and newer Challenger uses a push-start smart key with a proximity antenna, while the Grand Caravan uses a fobik that twists in the dash. The smart key costs $249 in your driveway, where a dealer asks about $460; the fobik is $189 against about $350. A 2008 to 2014 Challenger takes the fobik price.

My Grand Caravan fob unlocks the doors but the dash will not take it. What is wrong?

Usually one of two things: the chip in the fob has failed, or the ignition node in the dash has. We test both at the van. A failed fob is replaced for $189. A failed node is a separate job at $279 to $695, covered on the page for that fault, and a new fob on its own would not have fixed it, so we check before you spend.

Can you program a Durango key if the car has a security gateway?

Yes. The 2018 and newer Durango, Charger and Challenger carry a gateway module that blocks key programming from the diagnostic port. We connect through it with a cable at the module or with an approved online login, and that step sits inside the $249 smart key price rather than on a separate line.

I lost the red key to my Hellcat. Can it be replaced?

Yes, and say which color you lost when you call. The red fob allows full power and the black fob limits it, and they are ordered as different part numbers. We confirm the part and the programming path for your VIN, quote it before we drive, and program it where the car is parked.

Will a used fobik bought online work on my Dodge?

Rarely. Most factory fobiks are married to the car that first learned them, and a locked fob will not accept a second car. New or unlocked fobiks are fine. Send us the FCC ID off the back first; pairing a new fob you supplied runs $79 to $119.
