Jeep Wrangler Key Replacement in San Diego

A new JL Wrangler fob runs $249 cut and programmed beside your Jeep, while a Jeep dealer asks about $460. A 2007 to 2017 JK remote key is $189, or $145 without buttons.

Two Wranglers share the name and very little of the key. The JK, built from 2007, starts with a metal blade you turn. The JL, from 2018, starts with a button and a proximity fob that hides a flip-out blade.

The 2018 model year trips people up, because Jeep sold the carryover JK and the new JL side by side. Give us the VIN, or glance at the ignition for a push button, which only the JL has. For a 1997 to 2006 TJ, we decode the VIN during the call to see what its key needs. Every Wrangler key is programmed at the Jeep and backed for a year, and a spare Wrangler key, bought while a working key remains, avoids the $60 no-key charge.

2007 to 2017: Remote head key (Remote-entry JKs; a Sport without remote entry carries a buttonless key with that blade and chip, $145)The JK head holds three buttons (lock, unlock, panic), or four on Jeeps with factory remote start. Inside sits a Philips ID46 chip, which the immobilizer has to recognize before the engine will stay running. $350 $189 $161
2018 to 2026: Smart key for push-to-start (Every JL; a 2018 Wrangler JK built on the old body takes the $189 JK key)Proximity key with a flip-out blade for the door locks. It comes buttonless, with three buttons, or with four where remote start was fitted. The chip is a newer AES type, and on most JLs programming must pass the security gateway. $460 $249 $211

Lost every Wrangler key?

Lose every JK or JL key and the fix still comes to you, doors on or doors off. With your ID checked against the registration or title, our cutter follows the code your VIN points to. On a JK we read the Jeep's security PIN (on most JKs it can be pulled from the vehicle) and program the new chip key through the diagnostic port.

A JL usually adds a step: the programmer has to get past the security gateway, which on most JLs and other 2018 and later Jeeps sits between the diagnostic port and the modules that hold the keys, before the new fob can be learned. Pricing works the same on both: the key you need plus $60, and whatever key went missing is erased from the Jeep before we go.

Jeep Wrangler key questions

Why does a 2018 Wrangler need a VIN check before you quote?

Because the 2018 model year was built two ways. The carryover Wrangler JK takes a bladed remote key at $189, while the new JL takes a proximity flip key at $249, and both read 2018 Wrangler on the registration. The VIN settles it, and so does the ignition: a push button means JL. We bring the key for the Jeep you actually own.

My JL key has no buttons. Is it still a smart key?

Yes. A buttonless JL key still holds the proximity chip that lets the Jeep start when you press the button, and its flip blade still opens the door. It is priced like the three- and four-button versions, $249, because the programming is the same job. We match the button count to what your Jeep was built with, so nothing on the key sits unused.

Will a hardware-store duplicate of my JK key start the Jeep?

It will unlock the doors and turn in the ignition, but the engine will not keep running unless the chip in the head has been programmed to that Jeep. A plain duplicate lacks a chip, or holds one the JK has never learned. Our $145 chip key and $189 remote key are cut and then programmed at the Jeep, so they unlock it and run the engine.

Is a Gladiator key the same as a Wrangler JL key?

Same style and same price. The Gladiator pickup arrived for 2020 on JL underpinnings and uses the same kind of proximity flip key, $249 at the truck. Button count and remote start still vary by build, so the VIN, not the look of the fob, decides which part we order. A Gladiator with no key left follows the same steps as a JL.

What happens if my JL fob battery dies on a trail or at the beach?

The Jeep can usually still start. Jeep's manuals for push-start models describe a backup: use the fob's nose to push the start button, and the Jeep can pick up the chip even with a flat cell. The flip blade opens the door. Swap the coin cell when you get home, and if a new cell leaves the fob dead, call before buying another, since we test the old one first.
