GMC Terrain Key Replacement in San Diego

From 2018 on, the Terrain uses a push-button smart key, and ours is $229 at your car where a GMC dealer bills about $440. First-generation flip keys, 2010 to 2017, are $165.

The Terrain has used two kinds of key. The 2010 to 2017 model folds a grooved HU100 blade into a flip remote, and from 2018 on the Terrain starts on a button while the fob rides along in a pocket or purse.

Underneath, the Terrain is a close cousin of the Chevrolet Equinox, and its keys come from the same GM parts system and programming procedure. That makes the price at your car the GMC table: $165 for the flip key, $145 for a plain chip spare, $229 for the smart key, where a dealer bills about $300, $270 and $440 before any tow.

Model yearsTypical dealerValue Car KeysYou keep
2010 to 2017: Remote head keyFirst generation. The HU100 blade is milled on both faces and folds into the remote; Terrains with remote start carry an extra button. For a second key that only needs to unlock and start, the plain chip key is $145. $300 $165 $135
2018 to 2024: Smart key for push-to-start (Keyless open and start listed as standard across the lineup; the VIN confirms yours)Second generation. The fob carries a steel emergency blade for the driver's door, plus a remote start button where the car has it. A Denali takes the same $229 job as an SLE. $440 $229 $211
2025 to 2026: Smart key for push-to-startThird generation, expected to stay a push-button car. GM's latest models may ask for a server login during key programming, so we confirm fob fit and programmer coverage against your VIN before heading out. $440 $229 $211

Lost every Terrain key?

No key left for a first-generation Terrain means a VIN lookup for the key code, milling the HU100 blade in the van and coding the chip beside the car: $225 for the flip key, $205 for the plain chip key. Nothing waits on a parts order.

For a 2018 or newer Terrain the lost-key price is $289: a new fob, its hidden blade cut to fit the driver's door, and programming. Proof of ownership comes first, registration or title matched to a photo ID, and the missing fob is struck from the Terrain's key list at no charge once the new one works.

GMC Terrain key questions

Will a key kiosk duplicate my 2014 Terrain flip key?

Usually not. The first-generation Terrain blade has its cuts milled down the flat sides, not along the edge, and the chip inside needs programming before the engine will run. Our van mills it from the key code and the chip is coded beside the car. A flip key is $165 and a buttonless chip key $145, against about $300 and $270 at a dealer.

Is a Terrain key the same as an Equinox key?

Often the same GM hardware underneath, but we never swap them on looks alone. The Terrain and Equinox share their platform in each generation, yet button layouts and part numbers can differ between the two. We pick the key by your Terrain's VIN, and it is priced from the GMC table either way: $165, $145 or $229 by year.

Does every 2018 or newer Terrain have push-button start?

Expect it on every 2018 to 2024 Terrain: keyless open and start is listed as standard across the lineup from that redesign, so each one should take a smart key. Ours is $229 beside the car, emergency blade included, while a GMC service department's usual quote is near $440 before tax. The 2025 redesign gets its fob confirmed by VIN on the call.

Can you program a Terrain fob I bought online?

Usually, when it is new, never paired and the right part. Send us the FCC ID and the GM number printed on the case before paying for it. Pairing a fob you bring runs $79 to $119 (a dealer bills $120 to $200), and the programming carries our one-year warranty, though the fob itself does not.

My 2012 Terrain is down to one key. What will a spare cost?

$165 for a second flip key, or $145 for a plain HU100 chip key that starts the car but has no buttons. We cut and code either one during a single stop. If that last key disappears first, add $60 to either price, and the Terrain stays parked until we get there.
