Recalls, and when the dealer is the right call
GM recall 14V047 touches the ignition, but it is a different fault. It replaced ignition switches free on 2,190,934 vehicles: the 2005 to 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2006 to 2011 HHR, 2007 to 2010 Pontiac G5, 2006 to 2010 Solstice, 2003 to 2007 Saturn Ion and 2007 to 2010 Sky.
That recall dealt with the switch itself and stalling, not a theft deterrent no-start. If you own one of those cars, though, run its VIN through nhtsa.gov/recalls first. Any open recall gets fixed at no charge by a franchised dealer, and no charge beats every price on this page.
Send electrical faults to the dealer or a good mechanic instead: battery cables, grounds or the body computer. A key or a cylinder will not fix those, and we would rather say so on the phone than sell you either one.
When the battery or wiring is the real fault
If the message appeared right after a battery replacement, run the relearn before anything else, because a battery change alone can set it off. If the relearn clears it and the message keeps coming back, or it never clears at all while every key looks sound, have the battery cables and grounds checked.
A failing body computer lands in the same place. It sends the same warning a bad key does, and replacing the key or the cylinder will not touch it. Owners who posted those cases on Reddit found their answer at a mechanic, which is where we would send you too.
What the dealer route adds
A car stuck in anti-theft cannot drive itself to a service department, so getting it there takes a tow, which by itself runs $125 to $200. Then come diagnosis, the part, and programming labor that local dealers list separately, commonly $100 to $180.
Owner figures show where that lands. On CarComplaints, 74 owner reports put the 2001 Malibu Passlock repair at a $600 average, one 2001 Suburban owner reported a $450 dealer charge for a Passlock sensor, and a national repair estimate site lists anti-theft module replacement at $566 to $664. A new cylinder fitted in your driveway is $179 to $349. If a dealer has already written up an estimate, pass us that number and we will quote the identical repair beside it.
Before you call, gather these
Note the model year, what the security light does with the key at On, how many relearn cycles you ran, any recent battery, key or fob work, and how many working keys are left. When a new key is made without copying an existing one, California law has the locksmith write your ID and the registration into a work order; keep the registration or title near a matching ID.
The number you hear on that call already covers driving out, and nothing is paid until the engine runs; card and cash both work.
