Mazda Keyless System Malfunction in San Diego: Start With the Fob

Mazda's Keyless System Malfunction warning often appears right after a used or aftermarket fob is added. A new original fob, programmed on a cleared key list, is $249 against $480 at a dealer.

Keyless System Malfunction is the message a push-button Mazda shows when its smart key system finds a fault with a fob or the parts that look for one. Owners often report it right after a replacement fob went in, particularly an aftermarket or used one.

The lasting fix is an unused original-equipment fob, programmed after every key the car has stored is erased, with your good fobs then added back. At your car that runs $249, drive included, where a Mazda dealer typically asks $480. One 2020 MX-5 owner posted a $716 dealer quote on Reddit and a $300 locksmith quote; a later comment in the thread reports a locksmith programming a new original fob for $240.

The table below covers the push-button CX-5, Mazda3, Mazda6, CX-9 and MX-5, each with the years it carries a smart key. For every Mazda key type and its price, see the Mazda key page.

Programming happens through the port under your dash.

Is this what your car is doing?

  • "Keyless System Malfunction" on the dash right after a new, used or aftermarket fob was added
  • "Key not detected" while the fob sits in your pocket, bag or cup holder
  • The push button start light flashing orange
  • A push button start malfunction message telling you to have the vehicle inspected
  • The warning showed up after a battery replacement, in a fob or under the hood

ModelYearsWhat happens
Mazda CX-52013 and newerEvery CX-5 trim has started by button since the 2013 launch. Owners search this warning with 2019, 2020 and 2021 attached, and with "after battery replacement". A 2015 owner reported a $170 dealer charge just to diagnose it.
Mazda32014 and newer; some 2010 to 2013 trimsStart button on every trim from 2014 and on some 2010 to 2013 cars. A base car that unlocks from the fob's buttons still starts by smart key, so it can set the same warning.
Mazda62009 to 2021, push-button carsKeyless start on some 2009 to 2013 trims and on nearly every 2014 to 2021 car. The repair runs the same as on a CX-5: erase the list, program the new original fob, add the good ones back.
Mazda CX-92010 and newer, push-button trimsThe 2010 to 2015 fob adds a liftgate button. From 2016, push-button start comes on trims above the Sport, so a Sport may have a turn key and no keyless system. The VIN settles it.
Mazda MX-5 Miata2016 and newerEvery trim from 2016 on starts by button. The clearest price gap owners have posted is a 2020 MX-5: a $716 dealer quote against a $300 locksmith quote, and a later report of $240 for a new original fob, programmed.

What fails, and why

Owners trace the warning to three causes: a fob the car only half accepts, a weak battery, whether the fob's or the car's, and a fob that has put itself to sleep. The first is the one that takes a programmer, because the problem fob sits on the car's list of keys until someone removes it.

A half-accepted fob is one added later: bought used, built aftermarket, or programmed by someone else. A used fob has already been paired to another car, and an aftermarket fob can look identical to the original while the board inside differs. Either can end up stored in the car without behaving the way the car expects, and the warning follows.

Batteries come next. A weak cell in the fob, or a car battery running low, can bring up the same message, and owners also search for the warning appearing after a battery replacement. Mazda dealers publish an explanation of a key sleep mode as well, in which a fob stops answering, so a fob that seems dead may only be asleep.

How we fix it at your car

  1. One price, set by VIN, on the phone

You give the VIN, the fob count and which fob was added. That picks the original fob to bring and sets one price before anyone drives. Newer models take an extra step we handle.

  2. Cells and battery checked first

At the car, each fob gets a fresh cell and the car battery gets a look, since either can set this warning on its own. If the message clears there, the bill is the cell price, $20 to $45, and no fob is sold.

  3. Every stored key erased

A programmer at the diagnostic port wipes every fob the car has stored, the half-accepted one included. Erasing the whole list, rather than adding another fob on top of it, is what takes the problem fob out of the car's memory.

  4. New original fob in, good fobs back

The unused original-equipment fob is programmed, with the emergency blade inside it cut by code. Then each original fob you are keeping is added back. Driving stays the same: the same start button, the same fobs in your pocket, minus the one that caused the trouble.

  5. Tested before you pay

Each fob opens and locks the car and starts it, and the warning stays off through a restart. You pay once it works, by card or cash, and the fob, its remote side and the programming carry a one-year warranty.

Recalls, and when the dealer is the right call

No recall or service bulletin for the Keyless System Malfunction warning turned up, and owner complaints filed with NHTSA hardly mention it. Even so, look the car up at nhtsa.gov/recalls with its VIN before paying anyone, since an open recall on any system gets repaired free by a franchised Mazda dealer.

The dealer is the better first call for a car still inside its factory warranty that has only the fobs it came with and keeps the warning after fresh cells and a charged battery. That points at the car's own keyless parts, which the warranty may cover. Once a used or aftermarket fob is involved, it is a key job.

When this warning is not a key job

Some of what sets this message off belongs elsewhere. A weak 12-volt battery, with dim dash lights or a slow crank, is for a battery shop or a mechanic, and the phone call settles that before any fob changes hands. A car showing the warning with only its original fobs, fresh cells and a healthy battery may need a dealer to diagnose its keyless parts.

When the Mazda refuses to start and reports key not detected, the general steps on car won't recognize key apply here too: try the spare fob, then the backup start method your owner's manual describes.

Where a dealer's Mazda fob bill comes from

The 2020 MX-5 row in the table shows a dealer quote built from separate lines: fob, module wipe, programming. Beyond the invoice, a Mazda that will not start reaches the service lane behind a tow truck billed at $125 to $200 in a typical case, and an out-of-stock fob can leave the Mazda waiting one to three days.

The gap is overhead. Nobody pays for a showroom floor here, fobs come direct from suppliers, and a single visit to your driveway or office lot covers cutting, erasing and programming. The $249 includes the drive, wherever in the county the car is parked.

Before you call: VIN, fobs and papers

Have the VIN and a count of your fobs, noting any added later and where each came from. That is also how we tell whether a new fob is needed at all.

At the car, bring along every fob that should keep working, because a fob missing when the list is cleared stops working until it is added back. Because this is not a copy of an existing key, state law has the locksmith note the details from your ID and the car's papers. Keep the Mazda's title or registration with you, and a matching photo ID.

Questions people ask

What does keyless system malfunction mean on a Mazda?

It means the push-button system has a problem with a fob or the parts that search for it. Owners most often report it right after a used or aftermarket fob was added. A weak fob cell, a low car battery or a sleeping fob can set it too, so those are ruled out before anything is replaced.

Can I drive with the keyless system malfunction light on?

Often the car still starts and drives with the warning showing, but nobody can promise it will start the next time you press the button. Keep the spare fob on you, and have the fobs checked before a long trip or a day parked far from home.

How do I reset the keyless system malfunction on a Mazda CX-5?

Start with what you can do yourself: a fresh cell in each fob, then a start with the spare. If the warning stays and a fob was added recently, the reset that lasts is erasing every stored key through the diagnostic port and adding back only good ones. That takes a programmer. With a new original fob, a CX-5 comes to $249, programmed where it is parked.

Why does my Mazda say key not detected?

Usually the fob's cell is weak, so the car cannot hear it from your pocket. Fit a fresh cell, try the spare, and use the backup start method in your owner's manual. If the fob it keeps missing is one you added recently, the car may only half accept it, and the fix is clearing the key list and programming an original fob.

Will an aftermarket key fob work on a Mazda?

Sometimes one pairs, but owners tie this exact warning to aftermarket and used fobs that the car only half accepts. The repair described here uses an unused original-equipment fob for that reason. If you already bought an original fob new and it has never been paired, the programming visit is $79 to $119, compared with $120 to $200 in a dealer's service bay.

What is the price to fix a Mazda keyless system malfunction?

$249 for a new original fob, programmed at your car after the key list is cleared, against about $480 at a Mazda dealer. If you own an unused original fob already, programming alone is $79 to $119. If fresh cells clear the warning, the visit costs $20 to $45. With every fob gone, the fob job adds $60.
