Mazda CX-5 Key Replacement in San Diego

Our CX-5 fob costs $249 with the emergency blade already cut and the programming done on your street, while Mazda dealers commonly bill around $480. No key left adds $60.

By most trim listings, no CX-5 sold here has had a key slot, from the 2013 launch through the third generation that arrived for 2026. So the question is never which kind of key, only which fob your model year takes.

Mazda has changed that fob more than once: cars from 2020 got a restyled design, and the 2026 redesign is its own fitment. We look the part up by VIN before heading out, cut the hidden blade by code, and program through the OBD connector under the dash. Bought a fob yourself? Fob programming runs $79 to $119 when the part is new and unpaired.

Model yearsTypical dealerValue Car KeysYou keep
2013 to 2016: Smart key for push-to-start (Button start standard from the Sport up to the Grand Touring, by most listings)First generation, the 2016.5 update included. Its fob started the design Mazda later carried into the Mazda3 and Mazda6 of 2014 on, and a metal blade rides inside it for the driver's door, cut to your key code. $480 $249 $231
2017 to 2019: Smart key for push-to-startSecond generation up to the fob restyle. The body and cabin are new while the fob keeps the earlier style. Many of these cars run Mazda's timed security lockout before accepting a new fob, so plan on a longer stop at the car. $480 $249 $231
2020 to 2025: Smart key for push-to-start (Every trim, Carbon Edition, Signature and Turbo included, takes the same $249 fob job)Mazda restyled the CX-5 fob for the 2020 model year, so an earlier fob is the wrong part here. The 2022 facelift changed the nose and the trim list, and we still confirm the exact fob by VIN. $480 $249 $231
2026 to 2026: Smart key for push-to-startThird generation, on sale in the US from early 2026. It is new enough that we check fob supply and programming coverage against your VIN as part of the quote; if anything stands in the way you hear it then, before the van rolls. $480 $249 $231

Lost every CX-5 key?

With every CX-5 fob gone, the car is keyed by VIN alone. We pull the key code, shape the emergency blade to match, and pair a new fob via the OBD connector, waiting out the security lockout on years that have one. Total: $309, the fob price with $60 added.

Ownership papers come first: the CX-5's registration, or its title, beside a photo ID with your name. A CX-5 fob tends to vanish somewhere busy, a trailhead lot at Mission Trails or a stadium parking lot, so after the new one works we wipe the lost fob from the car's key list at no charge.

Mazda CX-5 key questions

What does a replacement CX-5 fob cost with programming?

$249 covers everything: the fob, its blade cut by code, the programming and our drive to wherever the CX-5 is parked. A Mazda service department's figure sits near $480 for that part with labor, before tax, and a CX-5 with no key has to reach them on a tow first, typically $125 to $200.

Will a fob from a 2015 CX-5 work on a 2021 CX-5?

No. Mazda restyled the CX-5 fob for the 2020 model year, so a first-generation fob is the wrong part for a 2021. Fobs for 2020 and later cars follow the newer design, and the 2026 redesign has its own fitment. Tell us the VIN and we arrive with the right one, programmed for $249.

Is there a metal key inside the CX-5 fob?

Yes. Pull the metal emergency blade from the fob and the driver's door opens with it, dead fob battery or not. We cut that blade from your VIN key code with every fob we supply and turn it in your door lock before we pack up, so you know the backup works.

Does the 2026 CX-5 work with your programmer?

We check that during your call, using the VIN, before the technician heads out. The third-generation CX-5 is new, so we confirm the fob is available and that our programmer covers the car. When both check out, it costs what the other CX-5 years cost, $249 done at the car. If not, we tell you then.

Does a Turbo or Signature CX-5 cost more to key?

No. A CX-5 Signature, Carbon Edition or turbocharged model is keyed for the same $249 as a Sport or Touring of the same year. Trim changes the equipment, not our price. The model year decides which fob part we bring, so the VIN, not the badge, sets the quote.
