Chevrolet Tahoe Key Replacement in San Diego

A push-start Tahoe smart key is $229 in your driveway, and a 2007 to 2014 Tahoe chip key is $125. A Chevrolet dealer usually charges about $440 and $230 for those.

Tahoe keys split by generation: plain metal through 2006, the Circle Plus chip key GM used from 2007 to 2014, then a pocket fob on most later trucks. From 2015 to 2020 the trim matters, because push-button start mostly sat on the upper trims.

The 1995 to 2006 Tahoe takes a key with no chip; on most 2000 to 2006 trucks, GM's Passlock sensor inside the ignition cylinder handles theft protection. Replacing that key means one cut to the VIN's key code, $49 to $89. For later trucks we supply OEM or OEM-grade chip keys and fobs, program them at the SUV with GM's procedure and warranty them for a year. The Suburban generally uses the same keys as the Tahoe of the same year.

Model yearsTypical dealerValue Car KeysYou keep
2007 to 2014: Transponder chip keyThe Circle Plus chip key handles starting, and the locks work from a second, separate remote. With every key lost, many of these trucks run GM's timed relearn, explained below. $230 $125 $105
2015 to 2020: Smart key for push-to-start (Usually standard on the LTZ and the top trim that replaced it, optional on the LT; LS trucks and LTs without the option usually kept a $125 chip key and separate remote)The fob tucks a steel blade inside for the driver's door. Turn-key trucks of these years use a newer edge-cut chip key that does not fit a 2007 to 2014 Tahoe. $440 $229 $211
2021 to 2026: Smart key for push-to-start (A start button is expected across the 2021 redesign's lineup)On the fifth-generation Tahoe the fob is the key, and there is normally no key slot. Its fob adds remote start and a liftgate button on many trucks, and the emergency blade inside still unlocks the driver's door. $440 $229 $211

Lost every Tahoe key?

On many 2007 to 2014 Tahoes with no key left at all, GM's own relearn sets the pace. The new key stays in the ignition while the security light burns for roughly ten minutes, and that cycle runs three times, so allow about 30 minutes on top of cutting the key from the VIN.

Push-start Tahoes learn the new fob through the OBD port, and a GM security timer may make the tool wait before the SUV accepts it. The bill is the key plus $60, so a 2022 fob comes to $229 plus $60.

We need to see title or current registration and a photo ID bearing that name, and the lost fob is erased so it cannot start the Tahoe again. For the full sequence, see lost car keys.

Chevrolet Tahoe key questions

Why does one 2016 Tahoe have a key and another a start button?

Because push-button start was a trim and option choice on the 2015 to 2020 Tahoe. It usually came standard on the LTZ and optional on the LT, while the LS kept a turn-key ignition on most trucks. A key-slot Tahoe from those years takes a $125 chip key plus its own remote, while a push-button truck takes the $229 smart key.

Is a Suburban key the same as a Tahoe key?

Yes, for the same model year and ignition type. The two SUVs share a platform, so a 2010 Suburban and a 2010 Tahoe take one and the same Circle Plus key, and a push-start 2022 Suburban uses the same kind of fob as a 2022 Tahoe. Our prices match as well: $125 for the chip key and $229 for the smart key.

What does a 2021 or newer Tahoe fob cost?

The fob is $229, programmed where the Tahoe is parked. That covers cutting its emergency blade from the key code, pairing it to the anti-theft system and the lock buttons, and our drive to you. Expect a Chevrolet dealer to land near $440 after it bills programming labor, and a back-order on the fob may leave the Tahoe waiting one to three days.

My 2004 Tahoe cranks but will not start. Could the key be at fault?

Probably not. Most 2000 to 2006 Tahoes keep their anti-theft part, GM's Passlock sensor, in the ignition cylinder, and a failing sensor there is a commonly reported reason these trucks crank without starting while the security light is on. We will tell you so on the phone. The usual fix is ignition repair at $179 to $349, not a key.

Can you replace a Tahoe fob that went through the wash?

Yes. When a dried-out fob with a fresh battery still cannot unlock or start the Tahoe, a replacement fob is $229 at the vehicle. On a 2007 to 2014 truck the remote and the chip key are separate parts, so the key may be fine and a new or never-paired remote pairs for $79 to $119.
