Volkswagen Jetta Key Replacement in San Diego

A 2019 or newer Jetta key costs $309 programmed at your car, against roughly $600 at a Volkswagen dealer. Older Jetta flip keys from 1999 to 2018 are $209.

The Jetta splits at 2019. Everything from the 1999 Mk4 through the 2018 Mk6 uses an older Volkswagen immobilizer and a flip key we finish in one visit, while the 2019 and newer Mk7 sits on MQB and usually needs an online data step.

Inside the older run the immobilizer changed more than once. Technicians call the generations Immo 2, Immo 3 and Immo 4, and each stores its key data a little differently, which is why we ask for the year and the VIN before we load the van. Each Jetta key we cut is OEM or OEM-grade, milled on the proper VW blank, and under warranty for a full year. The no-key visit in general is laid out under lost car keys.

Model yearsTypical dealerValue Car KeysYou keep
1999 to 2004: European smart or remote keyMk4 Jetta. Most wear the flip key; a buttonless chip key that only starts the car is the $169 option. Build date decides between the Immo 2 and Immo 3 systems, a split we confirm by VIN. $380 $209 $171
2005 to 2010: European smart or remote keyMk5 Jetta, from the mid-2005 cars on the new body; early 2005 cars are still Mk4. The flip key carries a chip from the ID48 family and talks to an Immo 4 system housed in the instrument cluster. $380 $209 $171
2011 to 2018: European smart or remote keyMk6 Jetta and GLI, plus the wagon sold as the Jetta SportWagen through 2014. Flip key on most trims and still Immo 4, so there is normally no online step and the visit runs shorter than on the Mk7. $380 $209 $171
2019 to 2026: European smart or remote keyMk7 Jetta and GLI on the MQB platform. Lower trims keep a flip key, while certain upper trims get a keyless-access fob with a hidden blade. Both usually pass through an online data step during programming. $600 $309 $291

Lost every Jetta key?

A 1999 to 2018 Jetta with no key left still gets done in one visit. We read the immobilizer data out of the car, cut a blade to your door lock, program the new flip key and test it: $269 all in, $60 above the spare price, or $229 for a buttonless chip key. Have the car's registration or title at the job, along with ID in that name.

The Mk7 takes longer. Its key data usually lives in the instrument cluster, which sometimes has to be unclipped and pulled forward, and the new key normally passes an online calculation before the Jetta accepts it. That job is $369, or $60 over the $309 spare. A few of the newest dashboards have no aftermarket all-keys-lost route yet, and we check your VIN for that before quoting.

Volkswagen Jetta key questions

What does a flip key for a 2011 to 2018 Jetta cost?

$209 for the flip key programmed at your car, or $269 with no key left. A VW dealer quotes about $380 for that key, tax extra, and a Jetta that will not start has to be flatbedded there first for $125 to $200. A buttonless chip key that only starts the engine is $169 if you want the simplest spare.

My Jetta is a 2005. Which key does it take?

Either way it is the $209 flip key, but the car behind it differs. 2005 was a split year: early cars are the Mk4 body, and later ones, often called 2005.5, are the Mk5. The chip generation and the programming differ between them, so the VIN decides which blank comes out of the van.

Does the 2019 and newer Jetta have push-button start?

Some trims do. Keyless access with a start button came on upper trims of the MQB Jetta, while the rest stayed with the flip key and a turn ignition. Both are on the $309 row, against about $600 at the dealer, and both usually go through the online step. The VIN tells us exactly which key your trim uses.

Will a Mk6 Jetta key work in a Mk7 Jetta?

No. The 2011 to 2018 Jetta and the 2019 and newer MQB Jetta use different immobilizer generations and different keys, even though both flip keys fold the same way. A key has to match the car's system and then be programmed to that car, so we choose the blank by VIN, not by how the old key looks.

Does the Jetta SportWagen use the sedan's key?

Yes, for the 2009 to 2014 cars. The SportWagen shares its flip key and pre-MQB immobilizer with the Jetta and Golf of those years, so it sits on the $209 row, or $269 with every key lost. The 2015 and newer wagon was sold as the Golf SportWagen on MQB, which makes it a $309 key.
