Audi Q5 Key Replacement in San Diego

Any 2009 or newer Audi Q5 key, slot key or keyless fob, is $349 at your car. An Audi dealer typically quotes about $680 for the same key.

The Q5 reached the US for 2009 with a rectangular slot key, used through the 2017 model year. The second generation, from 2018, switched to a keyless fob and a start button, with no slot at all.

Both carry the same $349 price, but they are not the same visit. A slot-key Q5 is routine work in a driveway or an office parking structure. The 2018 and later fob is frequently added beside a working key in a longer sitting, and a Q5 with no key left may need parts from Audi, which the VIN tells us on the phone. SQ5 owners follow the same years. For the no-key case in general, see lost car keys.

Lost every Q5 key?

If every key to a 2009 to 2017 Q5 is lost, the comfort module holding the key data gets read, sometimes on the bench after it comes out, and the replacement is coded into it on the spot. That brings the price to $409, the $349 key plus $60, and the old keys stop starting the car. Ownership proof is needed: photo ID plus the Q5's registration or title.

When a 2018 or later Q5 has no key at all, the phone call decides the route. Some of these cars accept a fresh key in a longer session where they sit; others need a key or module that Audi builds for that VIN, which a dealer orders. The VIN tells us which before you pay anyone, and you get the list of documents the dealer counter will want.

Audi Q5 key questions

How can I tell a first-generation Q5 key from the 2018 and newer fob?

Look for a slot. On a 2009 to 2017 Q5 the rectangular key presses into a slot to start the engine. On the 2018 and newer Q5 you press Start and the Q5 finds its fob in your jacket or cup holder. Either one costs $349 at the car, and the model year on your registration usually settles it without a photo.

Does the Q5 Sportback take the same key as the regular Q5?

Yes. The Sportback, the sloped-roof Q5 sold here from 2021, shares the second-generation Q5's keyless system, so its key is the same $349 fob with the same longer programming visit. Mention a Sportback or SQ5 when you call anyway, because the part number on the fob has to match the car it goes to.

Is a spare worth buying for my 2013 Q5 while I still have one key?

Usually, yes. A spare made beside your working key is $349. If that last key goes missing first, the job becomes $409 and runs longer, because the comfort module has to be read with no key to copy from. On a 2018 or newer Q5 the gap is wider, since some no-key cases end up at the dealer instead.

What does an Audi dealer charge for a Q5 key compared with you?

About $680 before tax for either Q5 key, against $349 from us, so roughly $331 less. The dealer usually orders the key by VIN and fits it one to three days later, and if the car cannot start at all, a flatbed there adds $125 to $200. The drive and the programming sit inside our figure, with twelve months of warranty on the key.
