Mercedes-Benz C-Class Key Replacement in San Diego

The SmartKey for a 2001 to 2013 C-Class is $329 in your driveway; a Mercedes dealer asks about $620. For a C-Class built from 2015, we say up front the key usually comes from Mercedes.

Two C-Class generations fall on our side of the Mercedes key line: the 2001 to 2007 car and the 2008 to 2013 car, both on the FBS3 SmartKey we program where you park. Everything from 2015 on uses FBS4, keyed by Mercedes to one VIN.

The 2014 model is the one to check. It is the last year of the older body and is reported to keep FBS3, so the VIN decides before any quote. On the redesigned car from 2015, the straight advice is the dealer, and you get it on the phone with the paperwork they ask for. On an FBS3 car the $329 includes the key, its hidden emergency blade and the drive; why we cost less explains the gap.

2008 to 2013: European smart or remote keyThe W204 SmartKey, Keyless Go on some cars. A 2014 on this body reportedly keeps FBS3; the VIN confirms it. From 2015, Mercedes builds each key for one car and a dealer places the order, which is the first thing we tell you. $620 $329 $291

Lost every C-Class key?

With no key left for a 2001 to 2013 C-Class, the work still happens where the car sits. We usually pull the electronic ignition switch, read its stored key data on the bench, program a replacement from it and reinstall the switch, with the lost keys blocked from starting the car. It totals $389, or $329 plus $60. Keep your ID and the C-Class registration or title nearby.

For a C-Class from 2015 on with no key, what you hear up front is that Mercedes makes the replacement for your VIN and a dealer orders it. Take proof of ownership and a photo ID to the service desk so the order goes in once, and allow for shipping time from Mercedes. A 2014 gets the VIN check before either answer.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class key questions

Is my 2014 C-Class on the old key system or the new one?

Probably the old one, but it is worth checking. The 2014 C-Class was the final year of the 2008 body and is reported to use FBS3, which is $329 for a key coded in your driveway. The redesign that followed moved to FBS4. Share the VIN early in the conversation and it is settled before any quote, so you never pay for a trip that ends at the dealer.

My C300 is a 2017. Is that a key you program in the driveway?

That one is best ordered from Mercedes. On the redesigned C-Class that arrived for 2015, the key system is FBS4, and each key is built at the factory for a single VIN, then ordered through a dealer. You hear this before anything is booked, together with the documents the counter asks for, usually the title or registration and matching ID, so one trip covers it.

My 2010 C300 key slides in yet refuses to turn. Could it be something besides the key?

Quite possibly. The 2008 to 2014 C-Class is known for a worn or failed electric steering lock, which stops the ignition from turning even with a healthy key, and a replacement key leaves that fault in place. Describing the symptoms on the phone usually narrows it to the right part. A new key is $329, and ignition repair is quoted on its own.

I am down to one key for my 2012 C250. Should I get a second before it goes?

Yes, if the car is staying with you. A second key programmed while one still works is $329, and the ignition switch stays in the dash. If the last key disappears before then, the job rises to $389, with the switch pulled and read on the bench. The Mercedes dealer quotes about $620 for the same key, plus the wait while it ships.
