BMW 3 Series Key Replacement in San Diego

A smart key for a 2012 to 2018 BMW 3 Series is $399 at your car against about $750 at a BMW dealer. Older 3 Series bladed and slot keys are $349.

Three generations of 3 Series fall inside our price table: the E46 with a bladed key, the E90 family with a slot key, and the F30 with a smart key that never has to leave your pocket. Body style matters as much as year.

The overlap is what trips owners up. The E92 coupe and E93 convertible kept the slot key through 2013, two years after the F30 sedan brought in the smart key, and the E46 coupe and convertible outlived the E46 sedan by a year. On the 2019 and newer G20, BMW's newer body controller often means the key comes from a dealer, and you hear that before any quote. The wider lineup is on the BMW key page.

Model yearsTypical dealerValue Car KeysYou keep
2001 to 2005: European smart or remote key (Sedan and wagon; the coupe, convertible and M3 kept this key through 2006)The E46 key: a fixed metal blade with remote buttons on the head that turns in a conventional ignition. The chip in the head answers to the EWS immobilizer module tucked under the dash. $650 $349 $301
2006 to 2011: European smart or remote key (Sedan and wagon from 2006; the E92 coupe and E93 convertible from 2007, which stayed on this key through 2013)The E90-family slot key: a black fob you press into the dash next to the wheel, then push Start; an emergency blade hides inside. It is coded to the CAS module, and the standard key tops up its battery while it sits in the slot. $650 $349 $301
2012 to 2018: European smart or remote key (Sedan from 2012; wagon and Gran Turismo from 2014; the 2012 and 2013 coupe and convertible remain on the $349 slot key)The F30 smart key: nothing to insert, push-button start, and a spare blade inside the fob. On the 2019 and newer G20, many keys come from a BMW dealer; a VIN lookup during your call settles which way yours goes. $750 $399 $351

Lost every 3 Series key?

With every key to an E46 or E90-family 3 Series gone, the module that checks the key gets read, EWS on the older car and CAS on the newer one, and a new key is coded to it in the parking space. The $349 becomes $409 with the $60 no-key charge, the missing keys are shut out, and you show a title or registration alongside an ID in that name.

An F30 with no key is the longest 3 Series job on our list. The FEM is usually removed and read on the bench, and the new key only starts the engine once the engine computer's security code agrees with it, so the $399 key becomes $459. A G20 with no key usually belongs at the dealer, and that is the first thing you hear when you call.

BMW 3 Series key questions

My 3 Series is a 2012. Does it take the slot key or the smart key?

It depends on the body. A 2012 sedan is the F30, with the $399 smart key and a start button you press with the key in your pocket. A 2012 coupe or convertible is still the E92 or E93, with the $349 slot key that presses into the dash. The badge on the trunk and the number of doors usually answer it.

Why do the buttons on my spare E90 key only work after a long drive?

The standard key on E90-family cars charges its own battery while it rides in the slot. A spare that lives in a drawer slowly goes flat, and a long drive with it pressed in often brings the buttons back. If they stay dead after that, the cell inside has worn out, and a replacement slot key coded at the car is $349.

What if my 3 Series is a 2019 or newer G20?

The VIN decides. The G20 is built around the second-generation BMW body controller, and for many G20s the key is ordered through a BMW dealer and switched on over BMW's online system. If the VIN says that is your route, you learn it during that first call, with a short list of documents, so it costs you a phone call rather than a wasted afternoon.

Is an M3 key any different from a regular 3 Series key?

No. The M3 uses the key system of the 3 Series it is built on. The 2001 to 2006 M3 takes the $349 bladed key, the 2008 to 2013 M3 the $349 slot key, and the 2015 to 2018 M3 sedan the $399 smart key. The 2021 and newer M3 follows the G20 rules and starts with a VIN check.
